's for it to be approved and signed into law. today's the 27th. the senate comes back in session today, the house is in pro-forma so it probably will not do any work. you only have a few days left for lawmakers to make a deal -- ink a deal. the president took off last night from hawaii, but there's a five-hour time difference. time is working against these lawmakers. they will have to figure out something if they want to do anything before new year's. it seems quite likely that we are going to go over this cliff and that whatever happens is going to have to be resolved after january 1. it has been looking like that before the holiday, but certainly now, particularly if you remember for congress broke for the christmas break, speaker raynor was not able to get the backup plan through his caucus, so there was no pressure on democrats to try to counter that immediately. senate democrats saying we passed a bill that raises tax rates on incomes over $250,000, we ran on this and this is what we are offering. house republicans were saying, no, we want to negotiate something, figure it out and send it to us. someo

security, it's law enforcement. that's about a third of our budget. and it's not the part of the budget that's driving this -- it's not a part of the spending budget that's driving the deficit and debt much that's being driven by the growth in entitlements, which are becoming particularly for a good reason, which is that the american people are living longer, therefore taking much more money out of programs like medicare than they put in, and i suppose for reasons that are not so good, which is the cost of health care continues to go up. so we proved ourselves incapable of dealing with this crisis as part of the normal process of compromise, and so we created this cliff which was intentionally made so harmful that our assumption was that we would not allow ourselves to go over the cliff. because it would be so hurtful. and, again, that's why i say no deal, in this case, is not better than a bad deal. no deal is the worst deal because it means we go over the cliff. why isual thi is all this happe? for a lot of reasons. but one is that there are groups within both great political parties

they are looking for is a common sense approach that says those who are law-abiding should continue to have the right to own a weapon, but that you don't believe that right should be extended to everyone at every time for every type of weapon. >> matt, what i think frank is getting at is that republicans generally in the nra specifically seem outside of the mainstream on gun issues. my perspective is on a range of social issues on abortion rights and same-sex marriage and whatever party is seeming at that moment to be too far to the extreme out of the mainstream is the party that is losing on the issue. i think we may be seeing gun rights as the next sort of war on women issue. what i mean by that is i'm pes niftic that legislation is going to pass the house that's going to change anything at the federal level. i think because republicans are now seeping so far out of the mainstream on this issue, gun control could pully become for the first time a winning issue for democrats to run on. >> i hope you're right. i think wayne la pierre's behavior and the dynamic we are seeing means who knows.
